Many of you are aware that I am a frequent caller to the show “hoops” on the Fan 590. Last night I asked the guys what they thought all the Rumours and Buzz helps or hurts the Raptors off-season plans. They suggested that the rumours that seem endless around this team could actually help Bryan Colangelo in his effort to make deals. We all have heard how Sam Mitchell and many others in the NBA say they do not pay attention to the Rumour Mill that is all over the world wide web. Honestly though do we buy that? So if they do actually sneak a peak at the rumours around the league members of other teams may give a second thought to a guy like T.J Ford. Maybe they will make an offer for Andrea Bargnani. The point is being in the news is not a bad thing for business if your Bryan Colangelo. The more his players names end up on ESPN or Real Gm it is likely the more his phone will ring.
I may even take this a step further. I often say all of these rumours have agendas and if the info is out there someone wants it to be. So it may just be that it is the Toronto Raptors that are the ones making their own news. Just the other day Jim Kelly who is part of the Raptors brain trust as far as the draft goes said the franchise was looking to be active in the trade market. I think they have been active in the rumour mill too. Creating markets for the players that they would have interest in moving. Everyone says that Bryan Colangelo is a smart guy and this is a smart way to build up interest and offers. Colangelo himself has said very little about anything. But behind the scenes is he directing others to be saying lots of things? It reminds me of how Tabloid Magazines and Famous Stars who pretend not to like each other actually work together in order for the Magazine to sell itself and the Famous People to sell their own image. There is a famous quote and I forget who said it but it goes something like this: ” I don’t care what you say about me as long as you spell my name right”. So that is T.J Ford, yes I have it spelled right, and Insert Name here for possible trade. This is a way you can build interest where a few weeks ago there seemed to be little.
Lakers Cry Faker but still Lost Game 1

What a way to kick off the NBA Finals. Phil Jackson wondered out loud how injured Paul Pierce actually was and is after what seemed to be a heroic performance to some. Jackson thinks he was witness to more acting than heroism. Doug Smith on Prime Time Sports agrees with Jackson as well. Smith said that he found it pretty amazing that in a crowd of 20,000 scream Celtic Fans that Pierce was able to hear anything. Paul Pierce said he thought he heard his knee “pop” and felt a lot of pain. He was carried of the court and taken in a wheelchair to the locker room. Only to return minutes later and check back into the game and seemed to have not missed a step. Willis Reed or B rate movie actor the fact was it changed game 1 and gave the Celtics the win. It also has added some fuel to the fire.
If Pierce comes back on Sunday and looks healthy maybe he is a fan of the WWE. This is much like a recent angle they used with Shawn Micheals who faked an injury to score a Victory in a recent story angle. It should be noted though that Pierce is a incredible tough guy. He was stabbed in the off-season (Several Years Ago) outside of a bar. He was able to recover from what could have been a life ending experience to not miss a game the following season. The one thing we can say for sure is it has added to the drama of what was already going to be a huge event. I can easily see a Game 3 in L.A with Lakers fans chanting at Pierce, ” Your a Faker, Let’s Go Lakers “. He can only hope it is that nice. But the old 80’s east coast vs. west coast Rivalry is back. The winner of this series is not the Lakers or the Celtics, It is David Stern and the NBA. Sure one of the two will get the trophy but what Stern will get is far greater. A marketing blitz for his league that will score the NBA FINALS ratings that have not been seen in many years.
So it has been a busy week here at Dino Nation Blog and I am in need of a day or two to get some things done. So unless there is major Raptor News I will talk with you all next at the earliest late Sunday night. Have a great weekend and if you are in Southern Ontario, enjoy the nice weather.

The reason there wasn’t “much interest” a couple weeks ago, was because the trade deadline had passed. The reason there is interest now, is because everyone has shifted there focus to next season. I think you are right that people are talking for a reason, but I don’t think they are making things up. Their is a big demand for quality point guards, and Toronto has two.
I haven’t read your blog before, but I can tell by your photo choice that you are not a TJ fan. By the way, I think a lot of the credit that has been given to BC for turning the franchise around should go to TJ. I hope we get something good in return, otherwise their will be some big time sellers remorse. Look at Millwaukee, w/ TJ a they were a playoff team w/o they are Miami. Did you notice that TJ’s rookie season, where he led the Bucks to the playoffs, got Porter a job in Phoenix. Oh, and he got SMithch coach of the year.

Shawn Marion is one of my favourite players, and he somewhat address the need for the raptors because he is so athletic and can jump over people to get boards and has is explosive and can shoot with the raps and plays great many position defense. his contract is big, so what do you think about him and do you think it is realistic for BC to sign him, (plus colangelo likes him, i think drafted him, and is looking for a marion type of guy)

Welcome to Dino Nation Blog James, If you go back and read past blogs you will see I am a big T.J Ford supporter in fact I get told I defend T.J to much. The choice of photo was based on thought on how T.J might feel about all the talk of him being traded. You have to think he is pissed by it.
Shawn Marion claims he wants to stay in Miami. Justin you kind of answered your question Raptors can not afford Shawn Marion. I know he likes Toronto or at least did in talking with him years ago at Vince Carter’s Charity game. But money and Cap wise this does not make sense. That being said a trade at some later point should Miami struggle again could be at least possible but not likely.

One other note for James. Technically once 2 teams are elminated from play in the post season or fail to make the playoffs altogether they are able to make a trade. The roster freeze ends( You are able to Trade) when teams indivdual seasons do.

I think that dealing tj for jamal crawford would be a solid deal. Also, the raptors are missing a big, tough guy in the middle to take some weight off bosh’s shoulders. I think that jamal magloire would be a good sign also knowing that he is from toronto and want to play her aswel. Dealing of tj a first rounder for mike miller? or tj for corey brewer and a second rounder. Let me no what you think.
Cheers,
cory

Ok Those are a lot of different issues. Thanks for Comments first off Cory.
First I will take the easy one. Jamal Maglorie is done as far as NBA goes. He was a flop in New Jersey and had a brief time in Dallas. Realistically he has been done for awhile. There is a reason the Raptors have avoided Maglorie all these years. He peaked in that year he made East All Star team and never has got back to that level.
Jamal Crawford is inconsistant player but has the ability to explode for big nights. I am not sold on him as a player but admit that others may disagree with that.
Mike Miller would fit the Raptors system but in a sense just makes you have to move a player like Kapono or Parker. I would not add a first to get him based on that.
Corey Brewer is the youngest and best option on this list you have given, moving forward. I like his game and he has poteintal to improve. Defence is part of his skill set as well.
All this being said I think Colangelo is hanging on to both his point guards at least a little longer than majority think. He is trying to drive up the value he can get back in a trade and thus far is doing a good job of it.

Hello
Jamal magloire is in fact of the nba wanted list. For the mike miller trade he has a great permiter defence which the raptors need greatly. Mike miller i would take over anthony parker. What about tj our 17th pick for anderson varego. Is rebounding ability is suberb and his defence is fairly good. He would take some heat of Chris bosh also figuring the fact is stamina is very good. There are solid quolities about tj that teams would really need including denver. Maybe trading tj, our pick and rasho, and getting the 6th pick to possibilty getting oj mayo? I would love to hear your point of view
Cheers,

Already said my nickel worth about Maglorie I think he is done. He may be on a D-League Roster before he is on another NBA Roster.
Miller vs Parker>> I’d take Miller too by a slight margin
Ford for Side Show Bob…Can’t be done for now as Varejao is not able to be moved as he is trade restricted based on Cavs matching offer sheet of the Bobcats. But I like the deal when it can be done.
Raps won’t get O.J Mayo and I wouldn’t want him. I know he is talented but if people have issues with Ford’s ego that is nothing compared to Mayo this guy is a problem waiting to happen.
Sorry took so long to get back to you
