Raptors May Get Early Start To Season.

October 26, 2008

The Toronto Raptors Season may start 1 hour ahead of schedule. The blame falls on the World Series Phillies and the Tampa Bay Rays. If this series goes 6 games the Raptors and Sixers tip at  6. Um..6Sixers6…Yikes. Maybe that is just superstitious but what is very real is the Raptors only had 9 healthy bodies at practice. That lead me to thinking. Sam Mitchell…Player/Coach?

O.K maybe not but Sam did say he had five good minutes left in him. But I think the lack of numbers is getting to be a growing concern. Meanwhile Fans are in a rage over TSN2 and Rogers not having a deal and Raptor Fans with Rogers cable being left in the dark for 25 Raptor Games. In a time when there should be a lot excitement heading into a new season, there seems to be a lot of worried and angry people.

In regards to this TSN 2 mess. I got couple things for you:

Raptors HQ has a look at how this mess happened in the first place.

Also If after reading and you are mad as hell. Do what everyone does in today’s world. Join a Facebook group:

If we are going to mention Facebook Groups you can join our group as well, for the inside info on the Dino Nation Blog:

Dino Nation Blog Group On Face Book

So as I sit here on a Sunday it has come to my attention that I have not made any picks for the season here on my own blog. How did this happen?  I wrote one for T.O Sports who I am told will be hitting the street in Magazine Form soon. I actually did get a chance to write something for them. Some of it is the same stuff I have said here but if you would like to check it out here is a link to it.

James Borbath on Raptors @ T.O Sports

If you want to read some of my past work, there is a link to my articles over on the right on the main page. I also said over on Raptors HQ that Raps would win 49 games. Well I will get picks for my own blog prior to the season I promise. That would mean Tomorrow or Tuesday.

I also have some help too. Eric Smith is the best Raptor connection to the L.A Lakers we have. I was a Hornet fan before the Raptors and Eric’s second choice in the NBA is the L.A Lakers.  So what are Eric’s thoughts on his Lakers and if anyone can knock them off in the West. We will find out.

Also Raptors T.V has been taking a lot of shots from fans. But I will give them some love. They have had weekend editions of Raptors Today as we get ready for the opening of the season. That is something for the people that can not get enough Raptors even on a football Sunday.

I also am working hard at getting some guests to come join us at the start of the season. They are all busy guys but I will do my best to get some of the folks that cover our Raptors to come by and visit us as the Season rolls along. They have all been great and a big part of what makes the Dino Nation Blog what it is and what it will be. There is lots of things to be excited about this Raptors Season and here at the Dino Nation Blog. So I hope for both the Dino Nation Blog and the Toronto Raptors it is a successful season. I know I am working hard and I am sure the Raptors are as well to make that happen.

So see you Monday and hope you are having a great weekend and are excited to get the season going.

Dino Blogger Is Off To Toronto

October 15, 2008

I am off to Toronto to take in the Raptors and T-Wolves. So I am taking the time to write up something tonight that you can read while I am getting myself down to Toronto. I am excited to go down to the ACC and actually take in a game live. It is something that I rarely get to do.

I wanted to talk about that fact today. We live in some tough times and the facts of that are getting to games is harder for a lot of folks. I have been lucky enough in the past to have seats for games that were close to the action. But this time I will be up high in the ACC. But the fact that the building is always filled with energy and excitement is a credit to you the Raptor Fans. I hope that things in sports will not change to a point that the average person is not priced out of the arenas. One of the things that makes this franchise great and what it is.  You people stuck with this team through hard times and deserve a lot of respect.

Bryan Colangelo has come along and given people reason to be excited again about Raptors Basketball. I hope that people will always people to be a part of the live experience of NBA Basketball. It is something that every fan should be able to experience. It is why I do my best to bring you people that are close to this team to you here. Not everyone can afford to go to games and you experience games through T.V and Radio. That is why having the people who bring you those games as guests here is a great honour. I do my best to be both a fan and a journalist. I am going to Toronto to be a fan only for a day and I look forward to that experience.

I have something new for you. People love to share there views and one of the easiest ways to do that is Polls. Well now I am going to try once in awhile to include polls for you to take part in. It is something they have added to WordPress which is what is used to create the blog.

I will be using these often so you can have your say and see what the rest of you fellow readers are thinking. This seemed the most obvious question to start with. So I am off to Toronto tomorrow. The game is on Raptors T.V for those that have it you can check it out there. If you do not NBA.Com may have a audio feed you can check out. I am not sure if Fan 590 has baseball but Eric did do a live blog from the last game and I know he, Paul and Jack are going to be there so check out Erics Blog and I am sure he will have something for you to follow the game if you do not have Raps TV.

Raptors Game Day-Pre Season Edition

October 7, 2008

First thing is first there is no TV for this game. But I did track down a Cleveland Radio Station that is covering the game so here is the link in case you missed it yesterday:

Cleveland Radio Station carrying Raptors vs Cavs Tomorrow (NOT AVILABLE IN CANADA READ BELOW)

IMPORTANT UPDATE

( Thanks To Rob He happened To Try The Link and It Does Not Work Here In Canada To Get The Web Feed, This Sucks But thanks to Rob For Thinking Ahead and Checking This Out)

But Hope is not lost Dino Nation. If you have an Account on NBA.Com. The same one you would need to be in our fantasy leagues. They are having Audio of All Preseason Games For Free:

Link To NBA.Com Audio Feed

Now I am happy to say that the Dino Nation Blog has done a lot of growing over the summer. So some of you may not be aware of what the Dino Nation Blog does for Raptor games as far as coverage. So for every Raptor game we do what we call around here the Raptor Rewind. Which is a complete re-cap written by yours truly and it also includes a podcast from me with my thoughts on the game and what is to come. But new for this season I am going to try to have pre-game chats as well so come talk about your thoughts before the game with us. Just use the link on main page to our live chat.

Speaking of Chats

I want to thank the folks that came out last night for our chat night. I enjoy these things no matter how many folks show up for them. I like to hear what you folks are thinking be it through your e-mails, comments or as part of these chat events. So keep up the good work in that regard and I will always do my best to respond to you the loyal readers of this blog.

The Match-Up

Cleveland is also playing there first game of the pre-season. Cavs fans are excited to see just what Mo Williams can do as the starting point guard in Cleveland. While Raptor fans want to see J.O and CB4 and what the duo can get done. But also there will be a lot of interest in Andrea Bargnani through out this pre-season to see what he can get done. In a pre-season game and a first one at that it is not likely we will get to see much of anything that will provide answers. However for someone like Roko Ukic this will be very important for him to build up his understanding of the NBA game. He will need to develop at a faster rate than Jose Calderon did in his first year. The thought is that Will Solomon will fill the gap until Ukic is ready to handle back-up point guard minutes. This would also have been a good time for Nathan Jawai to be gaining experience but he is on the sidelines and we all wait to hear the results from his doctors visit on Friday. Doug Smith suggested we may know something as early as Thursday. Which will mean no Nathan vs the Cavs and Knicks at least.

No T.V Till Wednesday

Raptors T.V has been taking a rough ride from this blog and a lot of hardcore Raptor Fans. I am not going to defend that because I think they need to listen to their subscribers like me. But they will have all 5 home dates including Edmonton so that is something for those of you with Raptors TV that want to see this team on the floor. The Raptors our also heading out to L.A for a mini tournament and we may get the NBA TV feed for those games as well. That has yet to be confirmed for now Raps TV is only saying about the 5 home dates.

Happy To Be Back At It

It has been a long summer and I hope I have done a good job in taking you from Game 5 in Orlando to this point. It is a great challenge on some days during the summer to find things to talk about, but day after day I was able to come up with something. It was not always easy but I think I was able to do a respectable job. But the time for games is here again and games that matter are only 20 days away from today. That is exciting and I can’t wait to get this season rolling.

So check back on Dino Nation Blog tonight for my Raptor Rewind Re-cap of the Cavs and Raptors. It is time to play the game as HHH says so well in the WWE.

One Last Thing…Tell Me if This Sounds Familiar.

Raptors.com did what I did about a week ago. They interviewed Lexi Haslam. To see how Lexi is fitting in with the Dance Pak you can check out this video from the Dance Pak and there photo shoot and a bit of an interview with Lexi that will SOUND VERY DE JA VU for readers of Dino Nation Blog:

What Is On Your Mind Raptor Fans?

October 6, 2008

Well the season is fast approaching. Tomorrow the Raptors hit the floor for their first pre-season game that they will play. Cleveland Cavs who finally have a point guard to play with Lebron James( At least they hope so) in Mo Williams. But tonight I am going to be holding a chat for you fans to hear what you want to talk about. So tell a friend time is 7:30 pm EDT.  If you have questions or comments about the Toronto Raptors you can bring them and express them and share them with us.

I interview a lot of folks to get us all more information but I also want to hear what Raptor Fans think. Your opinions count to as far as Dino Nation Blog is concerned. I try my best to understand the fan base of the Toronto Raptors. It allows me to ask questions that you want answers to from the folks I get to talk with.  I was told back in college there is no such thing as a stupid question and I think it is true if it helps you learn something you want to know. The worst question in the world is the one you never ask at all.

So I hope you will join us for our Raptor Chat and be a part of it. I do all of these things to make you all feel a part of what you read each day. The Chats, The Fantasy Leagues, Live blogging it is all done to make you feel a party of the Dino Nation and this blog. In a hockey mad nation it is important to find your basketball people that love basketball. I plan on looking to expand on these things and maybe have pre game chats and other things that will fit as part of the NBA Season. These things take time to do but I feel they are just as important as the time I put into gathering information for the blog. It also allows me to get to know you and for you to get to know me as well.

Raptors vs Knicks on Raps T.V

Raptors T.V will have all your home games (Edmonton included) will be broadcast. Matt Devlin will be joined by Sherman Hamilton of Raptors TV in the broadcast booth.  When Season gets rolling Jack Armstrong will be found on TSN and Leo Rautins will be on the other networks. TSN will be covering the most games this year. Raptors T.V will not be broadcasting any games on their own. I would imagine that games that appear on TSN2 may end up on Raptors TV as well because TSN2 is not on a lot of cable systems yet. I will investigate and get a firm answer on this prior to the season starting.

High Expectations For Raptors

One of the major themes of our chat tonight I am guessing will be about the high expectations for this Raptor Basketball Team. There is always a big risk attached to that. I take you back to the season after the Toronto Raptors had made it to one Vince Carter shot away from the Conference Finals.  The summer that followed saw the Raptors re-sign all of the main players of that team and the addition of Hakeem the Dream. The dream would become a nightmare for the Raptors. They would over pay for guys like Antonio Davis, Jerome Williams and Alvin Williams. An off-season of high expectation turned into a season that was not anything that looked like an Eastern Conference contender.

The Raptors our considered by even outsiders as a contender in the East this year. But the doom that happened the last time around should not happen again. The Raptors our not locked into  long term deals with players that could blow up in their face. J.O if health or if not is only under contract till 2010. So if things to not work out the Raptors get a huge amount of cash to be used in what most NBA experts have said will be the key off-season in the NBA. It will have Lebron James, Chris Bosh and many other big names able to hit the free agent market. The fact the Raptors will have money for that time is something that you can feel safe about. So no matter what happens between now and than it will not have that same impact that it did back in the early 2000’s.

If you want to put it in stock market terms. Glen Grundwald took a high risk in the moves he made. Bryan Colangelo has taken a low risk that could hope lead to a high reward in the short term. Grundwald was forced by the team’s success to make long term contracts to players that in retrospect were not wise moves. It was all done in the hopes of keeping the Raptors biggest commodity Vince Carter. The same can be argued about the move to acquire  J.O was made in part to give Chris Bosh reason to have faith in management of the Raptors. But the reality is this move does make a statement to no only Bosh but the entire league that the Raptors our indeed players in this NBA as far as doing what it takes to try to win.

But what all this means at the grass roots level of the average fan is that they expect results. So this is a pressure on everyone in the organization to produce results. But understand that what’s happens this season good or bad the Raptors are in a much stronger spot than they were back then. It was a risk worth taking for Bryan Colangelo. The person that is under the most under the gun if anyone is would be Sam Mitchell. This is a team that most reflects the type of team that is a “Sam Mitchell” type team. It will be important that same gets the most out of what Bryan Colangelo called ” The best team on paper since he has been here” so that means Sam needs to bring home results that match that statement.

The Topics

J.O , Jose, Andrea and everything else will be on the table for us to talk about. The choice is up to you what we talk about. I think there is a lot of things that our interesting about this upcoming season for the Toronto Raptors and I am ready to talk about all of it. So I hope you come into our chat room and take part in what I hope will be a great conversation about the Raptors, NBA and the Dino Nation Blog.

A New Page On Dino Nation Blog That Belongs To You.

I got a bunch of photos from a couple of readers and I will share some more after this. But it gave me an idea it is the Dino Nation Scrapbook. There is an explanation on that page but basically it is a way for everyone to share any experiences they have with The Raptors or this Blog in the form of Pictures and Videos. So if you have a pic or video that is of a Toronto Raptor or if it involves the blog in some way it will go into the scrapbook and be there to share are collective experience as Raptor Fans and members of Dino Nation Blog.  So with that here is some more photos that will make there way to that page from yesterday.

Dino Bloggers Take on Ottawa (Some Random Thoughts)

Remember back in the summer time when I told you Joey Graham was going to tear it up in summer league. Well I was right about that one. But what I also said was don’t take it to mean anything. I said that I refused to get fooled by Joey Graham again. So it was not shocking to me when Joey ends up getting a bad hamstring that caused him to sit on the sidelines for most of the time in Ottawa. I am just done with Joey Graham and even if he comes around to any degree this season I can not imagine a way I would be saying that the Raptors should resign him. But if you hold out hope for Joey I will say this to you, if Joey is EVER going to get it this is the year he has too. Not just to stay with the Raptors but to stay in the NBA. He has had lots of time to show us more than flashes of brillance and I am still waiting.

Nathan Jawai has been to the doctor by now I would think. Here is hoping all will check out for him to get his rookie season and amazing story back on track. I have no T.J Ford to cheer for anymore in Raptorland and I have really got behind Nathan and his story. I was expecting big things from him and still hope I can have those expectations based on how his medical stuff comes out.

Doug Smith was wrong and I was wrong for buying into what he said. I am talking about Jamario Moon and him being in some hot water over is late arrival back to Canada for his second season. I forgot one thing. Sam Mitchell doesn’t care what Doug Smith knows or thinks and Sam is loyal to a fault so you can expect Jamario Moon back in the starting line-up to start the season.  Sam stuck behind T.J Ford for a lot longer than the fans did and I respected him for that. So I should have known that Sam would not buckle or turn his back on J. Moon over something so minor.

Speaking of Sam Mitchell, I watch Raptors Today on my Raptors T.V everyday. It would be nice if there was more to watch but that is a story for another day. But when I watch Raptors Today I am always excited to hear from Sam. I call it my ” Sam Mitchell laugh of the day “,  you can count on it happening everyday around 6:05pm. Sam press scrums are some of the best entertainment I get on a daily basis.

Speaking of entertainment. Matt Devlin was working hard up in Ottawa and some of the funniest stuff was with him and Jason Kapono. He knows Kapono from the time they spent together in Charlotte with the Bobcat Organization. Matt has told me that he and Jason are actually good friends. You can see that in some of the funny stuff the two did this week in Ottawa.

Great stuff from Raptors.com and Fan 590 on covering Raptors Camp. Also the Hoops Addict Blog and Raptors HQ were doing some good stuff as well. I got an invite from Raptors HQ to take part in their roundtable chat with a bunch of bloggers on this upcoming season. Should make for some interesting reading. So thanks to Adam for the invitation to take part.

That is it for me. I have had a headache all day so I am getting to this a little later than planned. But the point is if I make a promise I try to come through. Speaking of which headache or not I will be hosting a Chat for you folks as I mentioned on Monday 7:30 EDT. The link is on the main page and in the blog yesterday. So hope you can make it. I love getting to know my readers and this is one of the best ways for me to do it on a large scale.

Back To School On Raps With Paul Jones

September 2, 2008

Seems fitting that someone who worked in education would be our guest on first day of school for some. He now does his teaching through his work on basketball with the Fan 590 and Raps TV. If you read the interview with his partner Eric Smith recently a lot of the questions are on the same topics. But this time it is Paul and his take on these issues.

First had Paul look back on Spain and United States Gold Medal Final. Paul agrees that Jose and Raptors did what was best in terms of his injury. As well as some thoughts on Jose in his new role as the undisputed point guard in Raptorland.
P.Jones-I think Jose and the Raptors are looking long term after they held him out of the Gold Medal Game. By the way, it was nice to see the USA pushed a little bit but they had too many guys that were used to “big game moments” to lose that game. As a sports psychology guy, it just seemed Spain was too far past the peak of the aggression-performance curve. They just wanted every call and play so badly in the moment, I think they lost track of the big picture.
It’s going to be a tough year for Jose because he’s “on the radar” again but this time without a back up. It means more minutes and I would not be surprised to see his production drop initially until he becomes comfortable with his new role. He has GOT to stay healthy!!
After the press conferences of Jermaine O’Neal and Jose Calderon I have spent a lot of time wondering what the Raptor attack will look like on both ends of the floor. Paul Jones has chatted with Sam Mitchell and shares what he thinks we might see based on that.
P.Jones-Have chatted with Sam a couple times this summer but nothing about strategy or how he’s going to play. I suspect from what he said the day they introduced Calderon and O’Neal, Toronto may employ more traditional sets with an inside presence like O’Neal. He’s a guy that commands a double team and will help spread the floor even more for their 3 point shooters. O’Neal’s presence will be felt more on the defensive end. He’s a good shot blocker and that will help big time.
Awhile back I wrote about Chris Bosh taking the step from star to mega star. I asked Paul for his thoughts on Bosh given all the media attention and praise is he ready to jump to the next level?
P.Jones-I think Bosh is already at a high level of “stardom” in the NBA. Heck, the guy is a three time all-star and has been voted there by the coaches, not the popularity contest that is the NBA ballot for fans. Look at what he did for Team USA. The only way to get to the level of LeBron and Kobe is to win more
I asked Paul about his thoughts on The Raptors Schedule and his general impressions for the Raptors and himself as a broadcaster.
P.Jones-The schedule is very reminiscent of two season ago when the team just felt they needed to get to January and things would turn in their favour. That was a tough start to the season but they ended up with 47 wins. IF….IF they can get a few games out west before those teams solidify roles and a home court comfort level it could be a good year. One would hope as a more experienced team particularly in key positions, they can win on the road if they are healthy. The schedule is always tough on the family. Anyone in the broadcast business owes a debt to their family. You miss a lot of family time as the trade off for your job.
Many of us, media and fans alike have been trying to figure out just what the Raptors can expect from Roko Ukic. After an Olympic run playing for Croatia we got to see a bit more of him. So I asked Paul for what he felt we could expect from Roko in year 1 of his NBA Career.
P.Jones-I don’t think you can expect much from Roko Ukic in the initial stages of his first season. There will be all kinds of barriers to overcome – language, culture and most of all…playing more games against better players. Many international players have found the speed and athleticism of the NBA game a big adjustment. After speaking with some scouts he’s not getting glowing reviews. You’ll have to wait for my previews to hear what some are saying. In fairness though. I’d like to see him play LIVE myself before simply believing what others are saying.
I really am excited to see what Nathan Jawai can do. I think eventually he can become a banger on the glass for the Raptors. But he is lacking some overall basketball experience. So I asked what Paul thinks about the big fella from Australia
P. Jones-Sounded like Jawai was impressive in workouts. It may be easier for him than Ukic as he may have a more limited and defined role. But hey, he has to win over Sam Mitchell. I think a player like Humphries may see an opportunity for more playing time in the same role as Jawai. Nothing like internal competition.
Most feel the addition of Jermaine O’Neal instantly made the Raptors a better team on defensive end of floor. I said just by showing up in Toronto the Raptors improved in that area. I asked Paul if he agrees with that.
P.Jones-Yep. Just look at his shot blocking and rebounding numbers when he was healthy. The guy is a 6-time all star who is motivated to play. Even though it’s Chris Bosh’s team, I really think O’Neal, with his experience will become a leader in the locker room while still deferring publicly to Bosh who most people see as the face of the franchise.
From an SI article that says Raptors are 7th best in the East, to Jarmario Moon saying the Raptors are second best team in the Eastern Conference. The expectations are all over the map. I asked Paul Jones for his thoughts on the early expectations for the Raptors.
P.Jones-Still remains to be seen. When the deal was first made, I spoke to a Western Conference assistant that thought Toronto was now #3….yes #3 ahead of the Orlando Magic that ousted them in 5 games last spring. I don’t think its out of line to expect them to have home court in the first round. Regardless, to consider the season a success, they MUST get out of the first round.
I asked Paul for the biggest keys for Raptors heading into this season. What will be key for Success? and what could lead to their downfall?  The answer to both begin with H….
P.Jones-Health is the biggest key and it is something that you have no control over. Look at what happened when Bosh was injured last season and the team didn’t win a game out west at a key time in the season. This team has to become hungrier and I think some players may find it in themselves with a little help from O’Neal.
Many Raptor Fans were hoping or expecting to see the Raptors add a new small forward for this season. It didn’t happen so who is the front runner of the returning options for the Raptors at the Small Forward. That is what I asked Paul….
P.Jones-Don’t think there is a front runner right now. Kapono brings you offense, Moon brings you defence against front line players and Joey Graham could do both but fans have been waiting for him to do it for a while. Maybe this is his year with some of the other competition departed as he may get some more time
I am not sold on Joey. But don’t ever tell Joey I said that he could kill me. The honest truth Is Joey frustrates me to the point of insanity. Maybe Paul is right with no more Carlos that does give Joey at least the chance to play more. He did have a great summer league I will say that. Paul knows that too having covered all the games from studio for Raps TV.
I wanted to get Paul’s thoughts on blogs and what he thinks about them. It is something that is of personal interest to me. But I think it is interesting times as the lines between traditional media and the Internet are changing almost daily it seems. So I asked Paul if he likes blogs and what his general thoughts were on all of this.
P.Jones-I like the blogs and “new age media” It’s simply an expansion of the talk that we used to have in bars and sitting around as hard core fans. As someone who has been covering the team since day 1 and having seen things like the “one and only Dream Team in Barcelona in 1992″ I love to talk hoops. Some of the people think I’m crazy with all the little trivial facts that I have in my head or how I have had the chance to be involved with the game at all levels and still can’t get enough. At some point in every day I end up on the phone with a coach, a player, another broadcaster and we’re discussing or debating an issue. I see blogs and the new technology just making it easier. Of course, you need to have your bogus meter turned on or else you could find yourself in trouble.
I try to keep this blog as bogus free as possible. Having guest like Paul helps in that regard. As mentioned in the Interview with Eric Smith, Paul and Eric will be back doing all the usual things they do this basketball season. Which is good news for people that love their basketball because they do a great job. I said this before I wrote a blog and have only had that made clear to me even more since doing it. I learn a lot in talking with them as I hope you all do in reading them when they pop by for a visit here.
So in the spirit of BACK TO SCHOOL on behalf of students of the Dino Nation Blog (including ME) thanks to MR. Jones for teaching class today. There won’t be a quiz tomorrow. For all of you that are in school I wish you the best of luck in your studies. I have a lot of fun here but know that your education is very important. A lot of the skills I use to make this blog what it is are based on my education. Not just the writing but all the research and hustle that goes into getting guests and coming up with good content. My homework each day is a blank page and filling it with stuff that is interesting, informative and entertaining. It is a great challenge and one I enjoy. So good luck to all the Dino Blog readers that are in school this year.

Jack Armstrong Is Back With Raptors And Talks To Dino Nation Blog

July 29, 2008
HELLO

HELLO

Great news for Raptor Fans as Jack Armstrong is OFFICIALLY RETURNING TO THE RAPTORS. It is no secret to the regular readers of this blog how happy and thrilled I am to be able to announce this to all the readers of the Dino Nation Blog. Jack has been a part of Toronto Raptors basketball for 10 years and has become a fan favourite and a personal one of the Dino Blogger. This will mark his 4 or 5th appearance in the Dino Nation Blog. By far the most has the most appearances in this blog by anyone. This is without a doubt the most happy for us to have him here. The Raptors released this info early this evening. To read the press release check it out below:

Jack and Leo Are Back

True to his word he had promised that once this was announced he would come talk to us here at the Dino Nation Blog. As fans became aware Sportsnet was not going to continue on with it’s Raptors broadcasts starting this season. They had let go of the rights to the NCAA Tournament a few years ago that Jack was also a big part of on Sportsnet. Now with the NBA history as well there was really nothing left for Jack Armstrong as far as Sportsnet was concerned.

Jack Armstrong” When I found out about sportsnet making the choice to not carry NBA anymore it left me wondering what now for me”

But Jack was not the only one thinking this. In a real effort that brought everyone together Fans, The Media, Bloggers, and Raptors fans all wondered out loud about the future of Jack Armstrong. At the time it was not known that months later Chuck Swirsky would end up going to Chicago. People were focused on Jack and his future with the Raptors. Many know that Jack works on a lot of NCAA basketball as well as Raptors Basketball. Jack was now left with just his work on Raptor TV. That made many concerned that he may not return and would or could likely look to the NCAA as his full time job. This lead to something great and special. Every Media person you can think of that had anything to do with the Raptors was writing about this. Fans were becoming aware that Jack Armstrong’s future was in question. People on sites like Real Gm and other forums like it rallied together to get fans to send e-mails to the folks at MLSE. This blog took part in all of this as well. A Jack Armstrong telethon of support would follow. I have no idea how many e-mails the folks at MLSE did end up getting but the many posts you would read it had to be some serious numbers. In my chats with Jack he was always so grateful of what fans and the fellow folks in the media had been doing. So I was not surprised he wanted to thank those people on this day.

Jack Armstrong” It was really quite an honour to have people like Doug Smith,Eric Smith, Micheal Grange and many other people in the media to show me so much respect and support. I really thank them. But not just them but the many fans that also have shown me support it is really appreciated by me. I really enjoy what I do and am thankful to have the support.”

Jack will now be working with Matt Devlin who I spoke with today and will be stopping by to talk with us before he heads off to China. He is very happy to have the chance to work with Jack again. The two have worked together for college basketball and the WNBA. So how does Jack feel about the fact he is now returning to Raptors Basketball for season 11?

Jack Armstrong” I am very happy to be returning to work with the people here with MLSE and the Raptors. I have had a great 10 years with the Raptors and am happy that I will be returning”.

Jack is happy and I want you all to join me in saying two things.

1 HELLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOO JACK

2 Welcome Back

We here are happy to have Jack as guest here as often as we do and I look forward to that relationship to continue. But regardless of that Jack is very good at what he does and Raptor Fans are the biggest winners in the fact that he will stay a part of Raptors Basketball.

One More Day Closer To The Season

July 22, 2008

I have to admit when I decided to keep the blog going through the off-season I knew there would be days like this. Not much is going on to be completely honest. But I have continued to find ways to stay busy. I am hopefully I am in the home strech of the big feature I have been putting together on Nathan Jawai. Also I have a few other things lined up that you folks should enjoy as well.

Spain will be taking on Argentina today that should be an interesting game as we head towards the olympics. I haven’t got a report from my Spanish friend on the game yet but when I do it will be up for you to check out.

As kind of a follow up to the points made yesterday. Primoz Brezec and Bostjan Nachbar are both signed up for euro basketball next season and not the NBA. To this point there have not been “Big Names” heading to euro leagues. No offense to the Gangster Brezec but he is not a star. Still the numbers of players going over to Europe is growing. Like I said yesterday this is a growing issue and something the NBA will need to look at going forward.

Remember This?

Chris Bosh and Team U.S.A are getting ready for the Olympics in China. Bosh will look to be the first American gold medal winner on the roster since Vince Carter. We all remember Carter jumping over that french guy for a dunk. It may be the greatest highlight reel play I have ever seen. Carter despite all the hate of Raptor Fans in his glory days was very exciting to watch. That dunk may have been the peak of Vinsanity. It was shown all around the world. On the biggest stage the Olympic Games. It marked the end of the United States being an unbeatable force at the games as well. The most talented U.S team since that one is the odds on favourite to win this year. But if they lost a game along the way no one would be shocked or surprised. That is proof that the global game has improved just as much as it is to say the Americans have not. The U.S is having a warm-up game vs Team Canada this Friday. Be afraid!!!

I have to admit that I am very interested to get this season under way and will be interested to see the NBA Schedule when it comes out. The Atlantic Division is shaping up to be a pretty interesting place. The Sixers and Raptors have made major changes. Boston to this point is a little weaker but still the favourite heading into next year. The Knicks and Nets both have made major changes as well but do not look to have enough to stay with the top 3 teams. The Eastern Conference as a whole is slowly closing the gap on the Western Conference and it should lead to much more entertaining games.

If you ever have some questions or comments send them to me. On a day like today it could have been helpful to have a question or comment to talk about. So remember the Mail Room never closes here. Your mail is always welcomed at dinonationblogger@hotmail.com

Nate Is Retired…In Summer League

I saw something that I just thought was totally silly out of Vegas Summer League. Nate Robinson had his number retired at the Vegas Summer League. I won’t lie I am not a fan of this guy. He just to me is not as good as advertised. Robinson has an ego that far overshadows his small size. I can safely say that Robinson should enjoy the fact he has his jersey retired in Vegas Summer League because it will be the only time it ever happens.

Summer League Hype

This also makes me remember that summer league is not as big a deal as we may build it up to be. The fact it gets on T.V is a big reason fans pay attention to it. Speaking of which, Raps TV is showing the games for the Raptors now. Last night they had the opener vs the Kings and tonight you can see that game again at 5pm and it will be followed by the Raptors vs Nuggets at 6pm.

This all reminds me of my childhood. Long before there was pay per view. Wrestling made it’s money in Video release of events like Wrestlemania. You would wait for the videos to be released even though you already knew the results of the match-ups. That is kind of the feeling I have when waiting to watch Raps summer league games. I tried watching them live on the computer but in the end followed them watching the boxscores. I love what the New York Knicks and MSG do for summer league. They really do a good job turning it into something that they give a lot importance too. Raptors should look into doing that and sending down a crew to do up summer league big time. It would be fun.

Summer School Done For Raptors

July 20, 2008

Joey Graham showed signs of the player the Raptors hope he can be. But we have all seen this movie before. I said in this blog that I expected Joey to do well in summer league. I also warned everyone not to get to excited. Joey Graham after all is the basketball equivalent of a tease. So for all that are thinking Joey Graham is ready to take off. I recommend a cold shower. Until Joey can do this in the course of a NBA season I will not allow myself to get excited. This is not to say this week in Vegas is not a good sign as we head forward. If Joey came out in Vegas and sucked, you who have to wonder if he was out of chances. He basically is on his last chance to show the Raptors and the rest of the NBA something. The 08/09 season is a make or break one for his NBA career.

Hassan Adams was the guy that impressed in the Raptors free agent camp that last season produced Jamario Moon. Adams is not like Moon in the sense that he went to Arizona and played for the New Jersey Nets. He now gets a second chance at the NBA and he looks to make it count. He was very consistant in his play. He had said in an interview I heard on the fan 590 that he knew what Sam Mitchell wanted heading into that free agent camp. He can be a type of player that Mitchell will like. He knows the type of things he will have to do if he is to contribute for this basketball team. Summer league for him was a good learning experience to get a jump on learning the Raptors system. Adams seems to have done his homework long before he arrived for the free agent camp in Toronto.

Nathan Jawai is a raw talent and it is going to take time for him to become what he can be. But like I said in the blog I am working on a major feature on Jawai and knowing his story to get to this point. I am confident he will be able to exceed expectations eventually. It took awhile for him to get healthy as he came into summer league suffering from a minor injury. But in the last 2 games he showed that he can contribute but he still has things to learn. Expect his primary role at first to be going in to battle for rebounds. Sam Mitchell is going to like being able to send this guy into a game and have him battle on the glass.

John Lucas had a very slow start to summer league but by the end seemed to be playing well. Was it enough to get him an invitation to Raptors training camp and a shot at making this roster as the 3rd point guard/combo gaurd. I am not sure and it may depend on what free agents remain out there when teams are getting ready to start camp in the fall. But Lucas did make a good last impression in yesterday’s game vs Warriors. Who ever the Raptors select may get bumped up to the back-up role should Roko Ukic struggle to adjust to the NBA. So it is a important choice for this team. Last season when Ford was injured the Raptors had no one behind Calderon that could play minutes at the point guard spot. Martin and Dixion were just not good enough. Raptors have learned from that mistake you would have to think.

Joel Bosh was able to see some floor time but he is not and never was here to be a part of the Raptors plan beyong this summer league. The only thing that could happen is the younger Bosh could find his way to the Idaho Stampedee the new D-League team for the Toronto Raptors. But for fans that though the younger Bosh was going to being on the roster with brother Chris were not really seeing the real picture. This was a nice move by the Raptors to give Joel a chance to play and hopefully continue his basketball career. It was done as much for him as it was for Chris. When time comes to re-sign Chris Bosh a small thing like helping his brother does not hurt your chances one bit.

As for the rest of the crew on this roster it likely is the last we will see of all of them. Some nice perfomances by C.J Giles, Desmond Farmer and Jaycee Carroll at various points. But it is all done for them with the Raptors at least in the short term. Desmond Farmer may have a very slim shot at a camp invite based on his final performance of summer league in which he scored 22. But I would think that is a long shot. But all these guys have done enough to have a job somewhere be it Europe or the D-League.

Raptors T.V will be showing these games over the next few weeks I would think. They did show the buzzer beater game with the Sixers yesterday. I wish Raps TV would do what they do at MSG. The Knicks send down the broadcast crew and cover their games. I always enjoy Walt Frazier that guy is just to cool for school. Watch NBA classics of this guy if you are younger he was one of the greats. It would have been nice to see the Raptors do this given Matt Devlin is new to all of us. Having him call 5 summer league games would allow people to get to know him as a broadcaster. Not to mention Jack Armstrong in Vegas just screams fun to me. So the Knicks may not get much right but the do Summer league better than anyone.

The full group of Raptors will gather in Canada’s Capital City of Ottawa for training camp in the fall. Some will be returning from China after the Olympics. But all will be focused on getting ready for the 08/09 season.

Raps Finally Win In Vegas

July 19, 2008

The Toronto Raptors have finally won in Vegas. The defeated the L.A Lakers 89-71 outscoring the Lakers in every quarter. Joey Graham continued to have a good summer league as he lead the Raptors with 20 points in the win. Joey had this to say on the teams first win of the summer:

“For us, it’s good to get a win because that’s first and foremost out there. We’ve been playing well this week, and tonight we put it all together and we got a W, so we’re happy about that.” (NBA.Com)

After a close first quarter of play in which the Raptors lead 24-23. The Raptors would turn it up in the second and third quarters to build a large advantage. They would hang on to it through the 4th quarter of play to get to the winners circle.

They did all this after blowing a game down the stretch to the Sixers in which they lost on a buzzer beating shot with just .6 seconds on the clock. Joel Bosh played about 7 minutes in this one and had his longest and best performance in the same game. The younger Bosh had 6 points and was a perfect 2-2 from the feild. John Lucas finally had a nice day to scoring 16 points he had been struggling with his shot to this point in summer league. Nathan Jawai had 8 points and 6 rebounds in 20 plus minutes. He is now listed on NBA.com but his stats from his 1st game were incorrectly listed under Jawad Williams who is actually on the Cavs Summer League roster. In short NBA.com is a mess. They list Joel Bosh from Dexel but the younger Bosh is from Alabama State. I take pride in trying to get things right on my site. NBA.com you would think would want to do the same. Oh well next time I make a mistake I will just remember NBA.com makes mistakes so I guess I am allowed a few.

The Raptors will finish up Summer league today with a game vs the Warriors at 6pm eastern time. Raptors TV will be showing the game vs the Sixers from the other day. Starting at noon on Raps T.V. I just noticed this and added the info sorry I was not aware of this sooner.
